FracTunes

Math Education Through Music

Developed in 2025 as part of the MDD program at the University of Applied Sciences of Amsterdam, FracTunes is an educational toy that transforms the abstract concept of fractions into a tangible, joyful, and collaborative musical experience. Designed with accessibility in mind, it supports both sighted and partially sighted children, using touch, sound, and play to build understanding.

At its core, FracTunes uses wooden fraction blocks—halves, quarters, and wholes—embedded with magnets. When placed onto the base board, the blocks trigger corresponding beats, instrument sounds, or spoken fraction names, turning mathematical relationships into musical compositions. Each of the three lanes acts as a different sound channel, allowing participants to explore rhythm, division, and sequencing through auditory feedback and tactile interaction.
