String Spring
An Interactive Kinetic Sculpture
String Spring aims to blur the line between mechanic and organic, utilizing a simple physical phenomenon. Loops of string are accelerated to obtain a fluid shape and waves propagate on them as the acting forces change.
The adopted behavioral model imitates the interacting user by translating their movements to its own physical language. With a circular array of 6 ‘string shooter’ modules, the hexagonal form that is frequently encountered in nature is obtained, creating a mechanical assembly that mimics the organic.
User interaction is based on skeleton tracking provided by a Kinect. The extracted data of the user’s body and hand gestures are processed and translated to servo and DC motors of each ‘shooter’ module, actuating the loops.
